"Mikhail, what caused this? When we left, the uprising had been successful. Should we have stayed and let Ailuin and his men fight the werewolves on their own?"

"We would have failed if you hadn't." Ailuin's low voice filled the silence hovering over their small camp. The elf leader lowered his tall form onto the log next to Aleksandra. He looked the same as he had when they parted ways after the battle, except his blond hair was in a messy bun on top of his head. Somehow, he was male enough to pull off the look.

"What happened, Ailuin?" Jakob asked, moving his hand up and down her arm in a comforting motion. "Did we leave too soon?"

"You were dead, Jakob," Natalya muttered. "You had no choice. The rest of us did."

"The four of you did everything possible to give those in the ghetto a chance at life. I'm afraid this all lies on me. After delivering the remaining werewolves to Asgard, Freyja caught up to me and convinced me to go back and undo what Odin had ordered me to do—I needed to make sure Reinhard Heydrich died on June 4, 1942 to erase everything he'd done to make possible and streamline Hitler's Final Solution."

A sinking feeling inside Aleksandra's chest made it hard to breath and rubbing her knuckles over the deep ache didn't help. "By making sure Heydrich died on his original death day, it allowed for the deaths that were supposed to happen. Everything we've done has been for naught, so why keep trying?"

"It is as it should have been. We must mourn their loss and fight with everything we have inside us to keep it from happening again. With my own eyes, I watched future events unfold in the God's Glass if Heydrich remained alive. With his rightful death, only six million people die for Hitler's Final Solution. If Heydrich lived, you would have witnessed the deaths of billions."

Ailuin rose. "My men and I leave for Altaussee, Austria to continue our search for the escape route. Have you made a decision yet? Will you fight for camp liberations or help stop Hitler?"

In light of the recent discovery, Aleksandra knew what her decision would be, but she couldn't speak for the others. From the way Natalya stared at Mikhail, she knew they were talking to each other telepathically.

Natalya patted the back of Mikhail's hand, which was clasped between hers. "Mikhail and I will go with you to Altaussee."

"I would also like to go with you, Ailuin." She turned to meet Jakob's silver heather-green gaze. "Jakob?"

He smiled and rubbed the pad of his thumb across her bottom lip. Leaning closer, he pressed his lips against hers. "You have my heart and love for eternity. I will always choose to go wherever you go, mein bärchen. We will all go with Ailuin."
